Tax break in Budget?

Very soon there may be a full-fledged Budget 2009-10. Will there be a hike in the tax-free limit?

Prabhu Sabharwal, New Delhi

The BJP promised a tax-free limit of Rs 3 lakh. The Congress would try to match this not essentially in a sense of competition or one-upmanship but in keeping with its implicit promise to the aam aadmi. Remember, the babus in New Delhi and South Delhi have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Congress for two reasons in the main.

First, to convey their gratitude for giving a pay hike so generously as recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission. And, second, they would like to have more money in their purses which is possible only if the government leaves a larger disposable income in their hands.

One can, therefore, expect a generous tax-free limit hike with senior citizens and non-senior ladies getting more than non-senior males. This sharp differentiation has always sent a clear and positive message — the government cares for its senior citizens and is also for women emancipation.
