Focus on reforms?

With Congress in a commanding position in the new Lok Sabha to be constituted, will economic reforms be faster and more focused?

Sabyasachi Mukerjee, Kolkata?

I should think so. Remember, not only would it not have the Left snapping at its heels and stalling even sensible economic reforms, but also it would have a freer hand now that it is more of Congress and less of UPA. Disinvestment and financial sector reforms can definitely be expected to be expedited.

At the same time, the Congress, conscious of its aam aadmi constituency, would be loath to be seen as pro-rich. Therefore, whatever it does would have a large social content.

It would try to address the concerns of the masses more if only to blunt the charge that with the Left not being there to sober it, its policies have become more capitalistic, as it were. The NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) can be counted upon to be made more comprehensive and all-embracing.
