Rajat invited the HR Head to air his reservations on the plan presented to the board and asked for suggestion on how to make it happen. Having been used to fighting tactical fires daily, the HR community was somewhat sceptical about their own state of readiness to embrace something of this magnitude. Nevertheless they decided to go ahead with a workshop on competency mapping and consolidation and commissioned Sandhya to take the lead. As the Head for Centre for Change and Learning, she consolidated the competencies needed into four blocks along the quantum of change (X-axis), on the one hand, and the pace and rate of change demanded (Y axis), on the other. Delivering to promise balanced the delivery of a fixed quantity to a specified on-time delivery commitment measured by shipments that were received by clients on the committed time. A substantial reduction in working capital ensued with less calls from customers about delayed or partial shipments. Enhanced utilisation targeted the reduction of downtime of any kind to ensure uninterrupted production runs. It also meant that the employees were multi-skilled to undertake larger level of complexity of operations rather than attending too simple tasks one at a time. Lean delivery brought in relief by way of eliminating complexities of scheduling through much better matching of resource estimates, release of timely resources to the targeted jobs and their completion within predicted timeframes. New value discovery involved the cultivation of a completely new level of competency that required the senior and experienced among the workforce to undertake study visits jointly with the customers often at their premises scoping scenarios that may be very strategic. Drawing heavily on imagination and enterprise, it put the conceptual skills of out-of-the-box thinking to test. For the first time in her career, Sandhya was excited that she was attempting something that was in direct line of interest to the business. Even more exciting was the prospect of evaluating the effectiveness of this effort on its impact on the bottom-line.
