People Columns - 60 Seconds Chief! If the smiles seem to have faded, there’s a problem
Neeraj Gulati, MD, Ciena India Pvt Ltd.
One teacher I remember, and why: My middle school math teacher who taught us how to learn and how this learning is relevant in the real world, by “connecting the dots” for us. Students need to be excited about learning — there has to be a significant element of students pulling knowledge rather than knowledge being constantly pushed to them One most valuable work lesson, thus far: Competent, cooperative and performing teams can achieve the unthinkable. One thing I look for the most in a new recruit: Integrity. One thought from a book that I am currently reading: “Don’t sweat the small stuff… it’s all small stuff”. One tip for time management: Prioritise with discipline. One key thing in my fitness routine: Push-ups…makes you detest gravity. One signal that tells me there is a problem: If the smiles seem to have faded, there’s a problem. Very often, team leaders in their humdrum of daily routine miss this minor indicator and this if addressed at the right time can be the single most bonding factor. One technique for handling anger: Shelve the topic for a few hours, just park it in some corner of your mind. This technique not only helps one overcome the immediate irritation but also allows one to go over the issue objectively rather than get swayed by emotions associated at that weak moment. One essential ingredient in my investment portfolio: Pragmatism — diversification according to MY situation and MY family’s needs, not my friends’. One good thing about the new generation: Their hunger to achieve. An indomitable spirit that can be best harnessed by giving them an enabling ecosystem. One worrying thing about the young: The propensity to run down the “beaten track” to get there quick… One thing that clinches a deal: A requisite level of mutual respect. One definition of values: What you stand by, come what may. The only permanence in a person’s character, you can build on it and not lose it. One way that I use for resolving conflicts: By listening and helping rebuild trust. One favourite activity when travelling: Seeing the world through my son’s eyes (he’s seven years old). What he makes of what he sees is just fascinating and so very refreshing. One indicator of performance: Consistency. Makes all the difference, in fact positions you differently, gives you the reliability factor. One macroeconomic variable I keenly watch: Inflation. One dream I’d like to chase, later in life: Change one life, for the better, every month One good way to foster innovation: The road to innovation is the one paved with challenges. A risk averse, impetuous, “run of the mill” aka conventional approach isn’t quite an innovator’s approach. A culture of innovation needs mentorship, it needs an ecosystem of its own where innovators can mingle, share ideas and hone their approach. One clue that tells me I’m the leader: If there’s a fire, everyone’s rushing out and if I see myself rushing in, in many cases alone… it’s a clue that my heart and mind are both confident I can change the game! Leadership is also about conviction… it’s a steadfast commitment that you would not let down those who depend on you to lead. Leadership is about caring about the business objectives, but more importantly caring about your team and their families. Leadership is about tough decisions, about expecting consistently high performance. More Stories on : People | 60 Seconds Chief!
