Triumphant at 44

I WAS working in an insurance company before its nationalisation. As I had a desire to improve my qualification, I resumed my studies. In 1969, at the age of 35, I joined G. N. College, Killianwali, in Muktsar district of Punjab, which was 40 km away from home. I later joined Rajindra Govt. College, Bathinda, and passed B.Com in 1973 with high marks.

Because of my age nobody was willing to take me as a CA articled clerk. So I joined as an audit clerk with late S. R. Gauba at Ludhiana. (That meant six years training in those days.) He asked me whether I could afford to maintain myself and my family, consisting of my wife, children and four other dependants. I took up the challenge and passed the CA Intermediate exam — all the seven papers — in one sitting (a necessity in those days). Thereafter I cleared CA Final Group II in May and Group I in November 1978, scoring more that 60 per cent marks.

All these years I gave tuitions and did part-time accountancy work to keep my household running. Before I could qualify, my two elder children were also pursuing their professional courses. I passed CA at the age of 44 uninterrupted.

Mohinder Pal Bansal,

Bathinda
