Education Industry & Economy - Employment Columns - B-school Beat Lateral recruitments at XLRI Ambar Singh Roy
From the next academic year, students taking up the one-year general management programme and the three-year part-time executive post graduate management programme at XLRI Jamshedpur will be part of the institute's lateral recruitment process. Till now, only students taking up full-time two-year courses were allowed to benefit from the structured placement exercise every year. According to informed sources, those taking the one-year general management programme are working executives with some years of working experience. Those taking the three-year part-time executive post graduate management programme have working experience and are required to come to the campus for 20 days in each term of the year. Sources said that in the last two years, there had been a discernible change in the profiles of those who take up these courses. Earlier, an overwhelming majority of these students were sponsored by the companies they worked for. Now, around 50 per cent of the students undertaking the one-year general management programme leave their jobs to take up the courses at XLRI. They sponsor their own education there. Said a professor at XLRI: "So far, we did not offer these students with placement facilities because most of them undertook the course on the basis of sponsorship from the companies they worked for. Since many of them now take up these courses after quitting their jobs, it will be unfair if we do not provide them help and ensure that they get the jobs they deserve. After all, these students take some risk when they quit their existing jobs to undertake the course. We have decided that, from the next academic year, we shall provide placement facilities to students who successfully complete the one-year general management and the three-year part-time executive post graduate management programmes. Since these students come with work experience, they have to join at levels that are higher than the management trainee level."
