Health 108 Sun salutes
Bharat Thakur They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, the same can be said about the Suryanamaskar or Sun Salutation too. This dynamic asana combines twelve asanas performed in a cyclic manner to give your body the ultimate workout, not to mention the rejuvenating effect on your biological systems — nervous, circulatory, hormonal, digestive, excretory and cardiovas cular. All you need to get started is a Yoga mat. Each of the twelve postures works on a specific muscle group — the legs, the arms, the back, the stomach — each contracting and stretching alternately. This conditions the muscle in a pain-free way. Best of all, it’s a complete package that takes care of every muscle without overstraining it. It offers several cardiovascular benefits and improves stamina too. Ideally, 108 Suryanamaskars are recommended daily. But one needs to gradually build up to this level. Of course, it also depends on one’s fitness level and age. I would not recommend it for senior citizens unless they are very fit and have their doctor’s go-ahead. But for anyone below 50, starting with 6 rounds and adding one or two rounds a day will take you to 108 rounds in three months! (Those with backache, high blood pressure, or heart problems are advised to consult their doctors first.) And, along the way, you will observe that your body is improving in every possible way. You will feel the difference when you climb a staircase or go for a jog or walk.
If you are depressed because of low energy levels, just try doing 12 rounds and feel the difference. Breath control is an integral part of the Suryanamaskar and this ensures fresh oxygen supply to all vital systems. That’s why I call it the wonder drug of Yoga! More Stories on : Health
