Trends Columns - Life watch A different survey Preeti Mehra
For the first time, a survey has been done on the non-profit sector of the country, a sector that works mostly in the areas of religious or cultural activities, community or social service, education and health. The findings unveiled recently by Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA) provides an interesting insight into the sector and throws up statistics never been collated before. For instance, PRIA found that there are nearly 1.2 million non-profit organisations in the country, which employ nearly 20 million persons on paid or volunteer basis. The main sources of receipt for non-profit organisations in India are mostly self-generated funds, grants, loans and donations. And contrary to what is believed, more than half the funds of such organisations are self-generated through fees, charges for services etc. Grants and donations, domestic and overseas comprise two-fifth (41.9 per cent) and only 7.4 per cent of the total receipts are foreign funds. In fact, the estimated total receipts during 1999-2000 were as much as Rs 17,922 crore. The survey also found that 75 million households donate towards causes and the cumulative figure a year comes up to Rs 4,214 crore.
