Easy banking for all

Preeti Mehra

The disability movement in the country has been trying, in the past few years, to right several wrongs. The advocates have been trying to not only build awareness, but also improve access and facilities in several spheres, so that the physically and mentally challenged can be part of mainstream life.

In fact, an appeal to the Reserve Bank of India Governor Bimal Jalan by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) has yielded some heartening results. From now on, currency notes will be available with tactile clues to enable people with visual impairment to identify them. RBI has also formed a committee to identify jobs for people with disabilities in the banking sector and make the recruitment exams disability-friendly. It has made special provisions for loans upto Rs 2 lakh under poverty alleviation and employment-oriented schemes for the disabled.

However, there are still several demands pending including, making ATMs accessible for all categories of the disabled, giving them higher interest rates on fixed deposits, more loans for aids and appliances, housing etc. Hope these too will see light of day before long.
