Happy Diwali

Preeti Mehra

This Diwali, more than ever before, candle designs have broken all records. Each store boasts of an innovation in wax. At designer store INDI, NID graduates Davis Alex and Pankaj Verma even have large ones shaped like bowls, each with a dozen flames embedded into it. A perfect community candle designed to light up the centre of a courtyard or a table.

Candles at Ville D'este, a lifestyle store, have broad and narrow bases, embellished with semi-precious stones and a silver lining. At the Cottage Industries, they go triangular, hexagonal, round and oblong. And complementing them are brass South Indian lamps, not too expensive, but exquisite to hang on the doorway or to set on the table with the goodies.

But the best candles of all are the floating variety, available in most stores. Their serene presence in standing water bowls and still fountains complemented with scattered fresh petals, completes the festive picture. With all these options, make Diwali a festival of lights. Do avoid the smoke and the crackers.
