Interiors & Homes As unique as you Aziz Haider
The ultimate expression of exquisite beauty embodying space, colour, objects, material and design is believed to be `Paramba' the supreme divine Mother of all creations. Remembering Her and bowing to Her boundless creativity, the husband and wife duo of Meena and Ashok Chandra have aptly named their business in imported furniture after the supreme Mother. And the Mother too seems to be pleased, thereby bestowing a lot of creative ability on the couple. Every nook and corner that you cast your eyes on at the `total house concept' exhibition at Delhi's 18, Jor Bagh, seems a work of extremely creative minds, thus speaking of the lofty tastes of the promoters of Paramba. Of course, the furniture too is brilliant! Paramba is engaged in the import of high quality furniture, artefacts and allied products servicing interior design and architecture. The company has a showroom at Sultanpur Chowk on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and is set to launch another outlet at Crossroads in Gurgaon. At Jor Bagh, a four-bedroom house along with kitchen, drawing and dining room, children's room and bathrooms has been beautifully furnished with a wide range of artefacts, paintings and accessories besides the usual furniture. The furniture ranges from the exquisite handcrafted rattan to upholstered sofas, from bedroom, dining and living room to garden furniture. Says Meena Chandra, "We want to give a total house concept so that people understand the endless possibilities they have as choice. The commonly used colours in India are teak and mahogany. Since we are importing a wide variety of furniture in various different colours, we want people to know how these colours go along with different colours of wall and in different settings. "Needless to say you can find a sofa in beach, a bed in maple, or a table or cub-board in premium teak or walnut colours. There is an endless variety in designs as well. Accessories are on display to give a feel how the furniture would look in your house. All this is result of endless labour and hard work. "For a year-and-a-half, my husband took all the pains to travelling all over Europe, visiting different companies and understanding their furniture. We knew what we wanted and therefore zeroed down on a few companies and Paramba came into being," she says. Currently, Paramba is importing various items from six companies. "One company does the bedrooms and show cabinets, one does all dining room items and one does the creative lamps, centre-tables, side tables, etc. Another company deals exclusively in sofas. They are all ISO 9000 companies being sold in India under the brand name Paramba." Besides, there are alabaster items from Australia, paintings sourced from within India and ebony art sourced from East Africa, as well. Meena agrees that lot many clients with imaginative minds can use her furniture in hundred different settings. "If you just bring the furniture and put it, it may not have the desired effect, as dressing the furniture creatively makes it more acceptable to yourself and anybody else," she says. For this reason, Paramba is also contemplating having expert interior designers on its panel, who can give advice to all those wanting the services. Her advice to buyers is that since furniture is not something you buy everyday, you should give maximum time before finally zeroing on a particular item. As most of the imported furniture available in the market is straight-lined, with not much variety in colours or designs, she is confident that those going elsewhere from Paramba too will return, once their exploration is complete, since not many outlets may have the kind of variety in sofas, dining tables, beds, show cabinets and accessories, as Paramba. After all, your endeavour is to make your home the most unique place to live on earth, as yourself!
