What price life?

Preeti Mehra

You would have thought that the Department of Women and Child Development of the Ministry of Human Resource Development could do better than that. Answering a Rajya Sabha question on the number of children languishing in jails in the country, guess what figures the minister provided? Believe it or not the statistics were five years old — of June 6, 1997.

It only goes to show the sheer indifference of the Department towards the question and much more so, towards children, the future of our nation.

In fact, why is it that apart from lip service, the nation time and again fails to take development issues impacting women, children and marginalised communities and sections seriously? For the Government, human life sure comes cheap.
