Tata Motors now offers the 1.4-litre Common Rail Diesel engine in the Indigo Sedan and Estate range as well.

THE 1.4-LITRE DICOR engine of Tata Motors.

Finally, after a long wait, the Tata Indigo and the Indigo Marina get a new generation common rail diesel engine. Tata Motors has extended the application of the same 1.4-litre common rail diesel (DICOR) engine to the Indigo Sedan and Estate range.

Having launched the face-lifted year 2007 Indica and the long wheelbase Indigo XL last month, it has now announced the launch of the DICOR variants of the Indigo sedan and estate models, thereby increasing the choice of engines available to buyers in this segment.

The new variants feature the same new 1.4-litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) diesel engine that it had debuted with the IndigoXL. However, the DICOR option will henceforth be available only in the top-end versions of the Indigo sedan and the Indigo Marina estate. The 32-bit microprocessor based 1.4-litre common rail injected engine, generates a peak power of 70 PS and offers a high torque of 140 Nm.

The engine, which features a Delphi common rail system, uses high-pressure multiple injections and hydraulic and low friction mechanisms for ensuring better combustion and more fuel efficiency. The 16-valve engine has dual overhead camshafts, which enhance the high-end power output of the engine and a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT), which minimises turbo lag at lower engine rpms for improved driveability in slow speed conditions.

The DICOR-engine-powered Indigo sedan and Indigo Marina station wagon are priced at Rs 5.85 lakh and Rs 5.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively. Tata Motors, which has been testing and developing the DICOR range of engines, had launched its first common rail diesel engine on the Tata Safari in 2005 with a 3-litre configuration. Between the naturally aspirated, turbo-charged and inter-cooled and common rail options, Tata Motors offers the most diverse diesel engine range on any car and utility vehicle range in the country currently.
