According to a study by J. D. Power Asia, initial quality of vehicles is reported to have improved. The study, in its ninth year, incorporates 135 problems said to affect the quality of a vehicle. The Initial Quality Study states that the industry averaged 143 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) clocking an improvement of 49 PP100 compared to 2004. The Indian industry scored better than their Thai and Indonesian counterparts.

The compact car segment has seen the biggest improvement, with the Maruti Alto ranked at the top. The WagonR, another compact car from the Maruti stable, scored the highest in terms of improvement. Maruti is reportedly high in the scale, with the Esteem securing the top spot in the entry mid-size segment and the Omni coming second in the MPV segment.
