Hyundai plans diesel engine plant

The diesel space in the small car segment is hotting up with a turbocharged Indica from Tata Motor, Maruti's upcoming diesel engine plant, and Hyundai considering setting up a similar facility. Hyundai plans to capitalise on the preference for diesel-powered cars. It plans to manufacture 1.1-litre and 1.3-litre engines to be used in small and compact cars. It has earmarked $500 million until 2008 for this. Hyundai seeks to garner 25 per cent of the Indian market by 2010.

At present, Hyundai sources diesel engines from its parent in South Korea. Maruti plans to offer more cars with diesel engines after the completion of its upcoming diesel engine facility on the outskirts of New Delhi at a cost of $390 million. Maruti plans to produce 1.3-litre engines at this facility.
