No LTA if you are travel allergic

T. Banusekar

Query

I am entitled to Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) from my employer as per the terms of my employment.

While I would like to take the LTA, I do not want to travel. Will the amount that I receive as LTA be eligible for exemption?

Deepak

Reply

You cannot claim exemption in respect of the LTA.

The exemption u/s.10(5) will be available in respect of LTA, only if the amount is actually spent and subject to the limits and conditions in the section.

It may be mentioned that the exemption u/s.10(5) is available in respect of travel by the employee or a member of his family as defined in the section.
