CellOne from BSNL

The Communications Minister, Mr Pramod Mahajan, innaugurating CellOne from BSNL would make the cellular services scene more competitive.

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd — the telecom behemoth owned by the Government — launched its cellular services on October 2 under the brand name of CellOne. BSNL plans to cover 850 cities/towns by December 2002. This would make it the largest network in terms of geographical spread. This would make the scenario more competitive — Bharti, Hutchison and Idea Cellular. There are indications that the Government may relax some fixed charges payable by cellular operators to the Government and BSNL. This may mean cheaper rates are in the offing.
