Derivatives Markets Satyam, Reliance evoke more trading interest Sanjiv Shankaran
FEBRUARY contracts terminated during the course of the preceding week's single stock futures trading sessions. A look at the turnover during the week's trading showed that February and March contracts dominated the show. Generally, contracts that terminate the earliest are among the most popular ones in the single stock futures session. To illustrate, in March, contracts that terminate at the end of the month are likely to be the most popular ones. Since the February contracts terminated during the course of the week, the volumes were dominated by both February and March contracts. Among the stocks that dominated the turnover were Satyam Computers, Reliance Industries, Reliance Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum. Satyam Computers' February contracts recorded a volume of 11,014 contracts in the preceding week, and they were the most popular single stock futures contract. Satyam has been the most actively traded stock in the futures session, and the current week saw the situation remain unchanged. In terms of volume, Satyam's February contracts were followed by Satyam's March contracts. The March contracts registered a volume of 10,387 contracts. Reliance Industries February contracts registered a volume of 7,380 contracts during the preceding week. The March contracts of Reliance too generated enormous interest among market participants. The volume in March contracts was 9,575 contracts. Reliance Petroleum's March contracts were among the more actively traded ones, and it registered a volume of 5,381 contracts during the session. The relatively high interest in Reliance group's contracts in the single stock futures sessions came in a week when the companies announced board meeting that would consider a merger. The announcement came on Friday. Among the other stocks that attracted a high level of interest in the single stock futures session was Hindustan Petroleum. Hindustan Petroleum's February contracts generated a volume of 5,325 contracts during the week. Infosys Technologies February contracts generated a turnover of 4,363 contracts during the week and stood tenth in terms of turnover. The situation is noteworthy because Infosys' contracts were among the most actively traded ones, and they seem to have a lost a bit of their popularity.
