Cap on IT scrutiny

The Income-Tax department has been asked to cap the number of returns it scrutinizes. The total number of cases scrutinised will be 30 in ranges having company cases and 40 in others.

Earlier there was no limit on the number of IT returns subjected to scrutiny. Claims of heavy deductions under Chapter VI A and large refund claims will be considered to select cases where the returns will be subject to a close look. There could be fewer hassles on the tax front for those called on to present their cases from time to time. - BL Research Bureau
