Events Gutsy crusader
Sunitha Krishnan Anti-trafficking crusader Sunitha Krishnan is fighting a bigger battle than we can ever imagine, every moment of her existence. It is a battle against social stigma and double standards that we indulge in as a cultured, educated society. Sunitha has co-founded Prajwala, or `eternal flame,' a group in Hyderabad that rescues women from brothels and educates their children to prevent second-generation prostitution. Prajwala runs 17 schools throughout Hyderabad for 5,000 children and has rescued more than 2,500 women from prostitution, 1,500 of whom Sunitha personally liberated. MENTAL BARRIERSBut it is sad when people who are seemingly sympathetic to the cause have mental barriers of interacting with these people on a personal level. And such instances are not few, says Sunitha. There are people who donate money to help these women but stay away from hiring such people. And as a result of all these factors, Sunitha finds it very difficult even to rent a place. Even if she agrees to pay much higher than the prevailing rates, house owners are not willing to have her as a tenant. Will this battle ever end? - SP More Stories on : Events | Gender | Society & Development
