Computer Usage Columns - Come Again! That ‘syncing’ feeling My memory is extremely poor. I depend a lot on my mobile (E71) calendar and Net-based organisers. The best Net-based calendar, as far as I have seen, is Google’s. It can even send an SMS to your mobile to remind you at the set time. I also sync the Google calendar to my mobile using Goosync. This means I get two reminders — one from Google and another from my mobile calendar. It’s another thing that I forget about the reminder within minutes. I use three computers — the desktops at my office and home and my netbook. This is a huge problem for me. I start writing something in one of the computers and the next day, forget where I wrote it. It’s worse when I am simultaneously writing more than one. I tried using a pen drive and transferring the files before I shut down my computer. This too did not help. I either forgot to transfer the files or forgot the pen drive itself. Things were getting out of hand. So I thought of going for Net-based syncing. I got myself a Sugarsync account and downloaded the program in my office computer and laptop. When I tried to download it at home, I ran into a free-ware restriction — I could install it only in two computers. I found Dropbox through Google search. It did not have the two-computer restriction. I installed Dropbox in all my computers. I also came to know that G.ho.st (yes, that’s the name of the site) where I was already registered, also had a sync solution. So I downloaded that too. I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket, since each has its own advantages. So I use all the three. This has almost solved my problem. Why almost? Because I tend to forget which syncing service I have used and end up searching all the three. But at least, I know it’s there somewhere and is accessible. You can get Sugarsync at http://www.sugarsync.com , Dropbox at http://www.getdropbox.com and G.ho.st at G.ho.st. (G.ho.st also gives you a virtual desktop). R.
