Football fever

Do things differently. - MAHESH HARILAL

The football World Cup 2006 is going on and if we can't write about football-related geek stuff now, we'll have to wait four years.

This year's "PLAY-AWARD" (http://play-award.com) is all about football and the participants were given a simple motto: innovate football! So, what did the winners come up with?

The joint third place winner was the TEAR AWAY, a football jersey that is made of panels and if an opponent grabs at your jersey, he will fall away with just a strip in his hand while you are free to tear away to a goal.

The other third place winner, CALL-A-BALL is not just a football-vending machine: you can call a ball and also find someone to play with you while you are waiting for your loved one, maybe?

The second place winner, STICKER SOCCER, is a kit that allows one to convert a space into a small football arena for a quick game or challenge.

The winner of the first place was EGO SOCCER, a combination of motion and video capture and game. You can't have a game without a football, can you? EGO SOCCER allows you to watch a game from the ball's perspective and also allows you to control the ball through your own movements.

All we can do now is hope and pray these come to our shores by the next world cup, or even better, people do things like this with cricket!
