Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Uninstalling corrupted Norton
Recently, somehow, the Norton Anti 2005 on my PC with Windows XP got corrupted. Every time I try to open an MS Office file, it shows the message that the Norton is corrupted, and prompts me to uninstall and reinstall the same. Please suggest a solution. Kiran Mali As the first step, please start the OS in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key. When the system starts, please go the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and open the file "hosts" in a notepad. You will find some text and a line reading "127.0.0.1 localhost" delete all the lines below it and save the file, click on Start menu -{gt} Run, type in msconfig and click Ok. In the General tab, click on "Selective Startup" and clear/uncheck the "Load startup items" check box. This will prevent the start-up programs from running, including any spyware or unwanted programs. Please restart the system and look for any improvement.
If the system is stable, please update Norton and scan the system, install an anti-spyware tool such as Adaware SE and scan the system. Please refer this Url for more information on Adaware SE: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/ew/2004/11/22/stories/2004112200270400.htm, If you still have problems, try uninstalling Norton in safe mode. There is a tool SymNRT by Symantec, which is used for removing Norton products that will not uninstall. You can download it from http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 Please use this tool to remove Norton and reinstall it afresh.
