Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Shutdown hitch
My system configuration is P-IV /128mb/40GB /Win98. When I try to close the system, it does not completely shut down but a message, `Windows is shutting down', appears on the screen. Why does this happen? Vijay Kumar There are a number of reasons for the shutdown problem. In Win 98 SE, it might be any of the following: ACPI, BIOS communication problem, problems due to specific hardware/software configurations. As far as the ACPI settings are concerned, as a workaround, you can disable the advanced power management in the control panel. Please refer to your mother-board manual for bios settings and support for ACPI interface. For the BIOS problem too, you will have to find out whether the BIOS actually contributes to the shutdown problem. Please follow these guidelines: Restart the system and boot into DOS mode, rename the Bios.vxd file in your system folder to Bios.bak, and then restart the system. If the problem is solved, then it means that the problem was due to the BIOS, in which case you will have to update your BIOS to the latest. A shutdown supplement patch is available in the Microsoft site, which you can download from this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads /contents/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98SE/. It addresses shutdown issues on systems with specific hardware/software configurations running Win98 SE. Please download and run the supplement.
