String of problems

My system configuration is as follows: Intel Pentium III processor, Windows-98, Intel 810 E Chipset Motherboard (Integrated Agp & Sound Card), 128 MB SD RAM, 1.44 Mb Fdd (Sony), 20 Gb Hard Disk Drive (Seagate). I have the following problems:

  • I have a colour printer EPSON STYLUS 480.When I start Windows, an error called `Spool 32' appears and does not display printer icon near the time, and sometimes the system hangs. Please suggest a solution.

  • My Windows sound files like Utopia Maximize, Jungle Pop-up Menu, Robot Start Windows etc are missing. I have checked in Windows setup of Add/Remove Programs. Please suggest a solution.

  • My Windows edition is Windows 98. I want to know whether I can overwrite it with Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium Edition (ME). Please suggest a solution.

Spool32.exe is a indows 98 component that allows the computer's processor to quickly process a print job by temporarily storing the print job on the hard disk before sending it to the printer. This makes printing faster than if the program were to process the print job directly.

When there is a problem for the spool32 to spool correctly, then it will result in an error or just hang the system as in your case.

To solve the problem, please remove the printer driver and software you have installed, make a restart and reinstall the drivers and software again.

As for your missing sound files, please reinstall the corresponding themes to have the wav file copied again.

To do this, please go to Add/Remove programs-{gt} Windows setup tab, uncheck the themes check box, click on apply and then select the themes check box again and click on ok to reinstall the themes.

About upgrading your Windows 98 to Windows 2000 or Windows ME, it is purely dependent on what usage you are going to put your system to.

Technically Win 98 is upgradable to both Windows 2000 and Windows ME.

If you are thinking about having security and support for the latest hardware, then you can think about upgrading your OS to Windows 2000 Professional.
