File transfer from one PC to another

I had earlier loaded Lotus SmartSuite program in my PC. Now I have purchased an upgraded PC and tried to transfer the program to the new PC.

As I do not have a CD writer, I tried to copy through the floppy disk to transfer to the new PC. Even by breaking the folders into separate files, I could not copy some of the files as the capacity of the files was more than 1.43 MB.

The system rejected the report saying the file to be copied was too big and that I should insert a larger capacity disk. My attempts to retry did not work. An attempt to zip and transfer too did not yield results. My attempt to hook though e-mail also didn't work.

How do I transfer the program files to my new system? Please suggest a solution.

If the SmartSuite files you are trying to copy is an installed program, then simply copying the files and folder will not solve the problem.

Most of the programs do not work that way. You will need the installable version of the SmartSuite program, (the setup files). But if you want to copy the files, there is a better way than using the floppy disk. One way is you can connect the old systems hard disk to the new system as a secondary hard disk.

You can do it in a simple way by removing the CD-ROM and connecting the old system HDD in its place (you can have an idea of how to do this by looking at the way your new system HDD has been connected).

You will have to remove the jumper from the HDD to make it a slave disk.

Once this is done, all the partitions in the old HDD will appear as a new drive letter in your My Computer. All you have to do now is to find out the drive which has the SmartSuite files and copy it to the new system drive.

The other way is to make a direct cable connection between the two computers and make a serial connection between the two systems.

To do this, you will require a serial cable. You will have to connect the two computers' serial ports with the cable and will have to install the direct cable link which you can find in the programs-{gt} accessories -{gt} communication -{gt} direct cable link. Click on it and follow the wizard to complete the connection.
