Starting Internet information server

How should I start the Internet information server in win98SE edition?

sunsolariese@yahoo.co.in

You cannot have IIS on an Win98SE, you can have the Personal Web server, instead. It is similar to the peer Web service available in NT workstation, you will find the PWS (Personal Web Server) in your Win98 CD. To install the PWS, please do the following: Go to the following path \add-ons\pws\ in your Win98 CD and run the Setup.exe, then follow the instructions in Personal Web Server Setup.

If you do not have the Win98 CD, you can download the PWS from the following Microsoft site http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/ntoptionpack/askwiz.asp.

Once you have successfully installed the Web server, you will find a directory called Inetpub in the installation path you selected. While installing the PWS, by default it is c:\Inetpub. Here, you will have a folder called wwwroot. This is the default site location, where you should have all the files you would like to publish. You can, however, create new site locations later.

To start with, you can create a simple html file in this location (c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\) and name it as Default.htm. Now open your browser and type `http://loaclhost/' and your default.htm shows up. Your Web server is up and running, but what if you someone from outside would like to access your Web server?

It simply means that your computer has to be online (connected to the Internet) all the time, if you want the public to access your Web server. For this, you must have installed the TCP/IP protocol and have an IP address assigned to you (preferably static) from your local ISP.

You would also have to get a domain name like www.myname.com registered with some domain registrars.
