Website Review Columns - Eye 4 I Protect and popularise
With the Klez worm widely considered to have wreaked the maximum havoc in the history of cyberspace, the need for accurate information on the newest viruses to invade the scene has become pressing. The first of this week's picks gives you all the dope on viruses. Safety first, folks! One of the most impressive sites I have come across in recent times, this one scores high on looks, content and appeal. The main page gives you the latest news on viruses, worms and related creatures, and is well laid out. The link to the news section leads to you an elaborate compendium of news stories on the happenings in the world of viruses and other assorted virulent cyber-organisms. There are also quick links to hoaxes, which is quite useful because virus hoaxes are becoming a greater nuisance than the actual viruses. This link helps you track the hoaxes doing the cyber-rounds and save time and energy by not falling for them. The people behind this immensely useful site also bring out a magazine called Virus Bulletin magazine, which you can subscribe to in case you need an offline source for material on prevention, detection and removal of computer viruses. The site also features a library of virus write-ups covering a selection of recent, common or particularly interesting viruses. The next time you have any doubts or queries regarding viruses, you know what URL to click on. Co-operative efforts and collaborative initiatives on the Internet always get my vote, because there aren't as many as there ought to be. This site is one such venture that I am quite happy to recommend. The site's self-proclaimed aim is to create a high-quality collection of links to the most interesting and useful Web sites, mostly in English, but there are German and Italian sites as well. Wisely, the site lays no claim to being an alternative to popular search engines, rather they would like to amass links that people like you and me would be interested in, because they are suggested by people like you and me. Working in the true spirit of the Internet, which is altruism, the site encourages you to add links of interesting and useful sites that you have come across, basically helping you share your research. A wide range of categories is available, so your link finds its way to the particular section in the database. Besides waiting for users to contribute links on their own, the site also solicits links in a proactive fashion by suggesting topics every 15 days, such as weather or religion. This category is voted for by the users when they insert their links. Does it get any more interactive? I found this site quite useful and can safely assume that you will too.
