Hard disk upgrade

K.S. Parthiban

I have a 486 computer. The hard disk is an old one (250 MB). I would like to go in for a newer hard disk. I would like to know whether currently-available, high-capacity, hard disks will be accepted by my 486 computer? Do older machines support only hard disks of say 1.2. MB or lower? Can I also replace the older 8 MB RAM chip with the presently available 32 or 64 MB RAM on my machine?

It all depends on your motherboard. If the motherboard that you are using is the latest one, then you can easily install a high-capacity hard disk and upgrade the RAM but in this case the performance will be poor, as the processor will still be 486.

In case your motherboard is the one that you bought along with the 486 processor, then it might not support a high-capacity hard disk although you can upgrade the RAM. But in this case also, the performance will be very low due to mismatching hardware.
