KOLKATA, Nov. 6
CALCUTTA Telephones, a part of the public sector company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, is planning to introduce its much-talked about cellular services in the city from the last week of November.
This was announced by Mr Tapan Sikdar, Union Minister of State for Communications, at a meeting in Raj Bhavan after inaugurating a new telephone exchange that was recently installed in the 200-year-old building.
``Mobile services from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd will be starting off in Kolkata from November 23, that is, just after Diwali. At present, sound testing is going on, and if everything goes right our cellular service will be ready soon", he said.
The Minister was, however, cautious about future competition with existing private cellular operators. Calcutta Telephones has already installed 30 similar exchanges at different points, including Writers' Buildings, the West Bengal Government headquarte
rs, and at the income-tax office.
It has the capacity to set up 100 more such exchanges within the next five months.
