'Catch them young' has long been the strategy of the tobacco companies ever since 'research' revealed that a majority of adult users are those who picked up the habit when in teenage. Denmark was the first country to devise a solution to the problem of t eenage smoking by raising the taxes on tobacco products substantially, placing them beyond the reach of the average teenager with his/her limited resources through pocket money. India should follow the Danish example in protecting the health of its teena ge population and reducing, thereby, the number of adult users.
