`Postal Dept should adopt modern tech'
Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Oct. 10
THE Union Minister of State for Communications, Mr Tapan Sikdar, has urged the Department of Posts to adopt modern technology and move ahead with the changing times. In the emerging economic scenario, it would be prudent to focus on the development of ne
w businesses and increase revenue generation, he observed.
Addressing a function held here to felicitate Dak Sewa and other award winners, Mr Sikdar said although the Department of Posts was rendering ``social service throughout the length and breadth of the country,'' it would not be proper to depend up on the
Planning Commission or the Union Finance Ministry for support all the time. Instead, the department should focus on value-added services and improved across-the-counter services.
Besides value-added services that are offered under the India Post umbrella, the Minister said commercial advertisements on postal stationery and letter boxes would also help in augmenting the department's revenue inflow. In fact, letting out space on le
tter boxes for advertisement purposes had helped the department rake in Rs 80 lakh in Chennai alone.
Mr Sikdar felicitated nine Dak Sewa award winners ``who have performed beyond the call of duty.'' Awards were also given to business development executives, development officers, postmen and wards of postal employees who have excelled in academics, among
others.
