Concern over TNPCB moves

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Sept. 2

PLASTIC products manufacturers expressed serious concern over the `anti-plastic' campaign by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).

How could the manufacturers target growth in exports of products such as plastic bags when a Government body was considering a ban on production, they asked.

Mr Mahesh K. Shah, Chairman, Plastics Export Council, reacting to manufacturers' concerns, felt that it was an issue born out of a lack of awareness and misinformation. The Plast India Foundation, promoted by plastic industry associations, would take up the issue.

Efforts will have to be initiated at various levels to educate the public, address the Government officials concerned, and if required, explore the legal avenues.

The problem is basically due to improper disposal of plastic items. For instance, in Mumbai, the industry was coordinating with NGOs, ragpickers and the Corporation officials to improve collection for recycling. Similar steps could be initiated here, he said.
