WTO and dairy products

Sanjay N. Kshirsagar, e-mail

This refers to the problems the Indian Dairy sector may face on account of the WTO norms. The following measures may be considered:

Quality measures may be imposed on the processor level rather than the producer level. Strict quality controls must be applied to every gram of product.

More attention can be paid to export to neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, China, Thailand.

Farmers should get remunerative prices and the consumer should get milk at reasonable price.

Strong brands of Indian dairy products must be built up.
