PDS price-cut may pare FCI stocks
LESS than 17 months after the 2000-01 Union Budget decision to restrict supply of subsidised foodgrains from the public distribution system (PDS) to only the below poverty line (BPL) population and make the above poverty line (APL) segment pay the Food C orporation of India's (FCI) entire `economic cost' of procurement and distribution, things are back to square one, if not negative.

PRODUCT diversification is one of the answers to the question of bringing stability to coconut industry in the country, according to Dr P. Rethinam, Chairman, Coconut Development Board.

No ceiling on wheat product exports this year
THE Commerce Ministry has said there would be no quantitative ceiling for export of wheat products during 2001-02. In a notification issued on July 10, the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has stated that wheat products have been allowed to be ex ported `without any quantity ceiling' for the year 2001-02.

Cotton procurement scheme extended
THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the extension of the Maharashtra Government's monopoly procurement scheme for raw cotton for a further period of five years up to June 30, 2006.

Ban on import of rubber under ALS -- ATMA urges Govt to reconsider move
THE Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA) has urged the Government to reconsider its decision rejecting the domestic tyre industry's plea to permit duty-free import of natural rubber (NR) under the advance licensing scheme (ALS).

Cabinet nod for rubber MSP
THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has authorised the Department of Commerce to issue a notification on the minimum support price (MSP) for natural rubber from time to time. The MSP will be notified under Section 13 of the Rubber Act.

THE Tamil Nadu Government has announced a market intervention mechanism to shore up green tea prices.

THE United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) has urged the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to initiate stringent action against those engaged in adulteration of tea.

Tea Board revises 2000 output
CHENNAI: The country's tea production for the year 2000 has been revised by the Tea Board from 824 million kg (mkg) to 843 mkg. The output during 1999 was 806 mkg.
