Democracy vs politics

V. A. Gopala, e-mail

Criticism is welcome in a democracy, provided it is meaningful and suggestive. Presently, criticism has become a tool for personal attacks and character assassination.

Low-level remarks about veteran politicians, and mud-slinging have become the order of the day in Indian politics. And such an attitude is not confined to the highest level.

Ideology is meant only for printing election manifestos. Many political parties are functioning as `family trusts'. Once the founder feels the time has come to retire, his or her relative will be projected as the successor.

According to media reports, the Shiv Sena leader is projecting his son or nephew as his successor. The DMK leader, Mr M. Karunanidhi is also projecting his son.

This is the tragedy of our democracy. Strengthening ideology-based politics is the only solution to overcome the present personality-dependent party systems.
