SEA suggests tech upgrade norms for vegoil sector

MUMBAI, May 6

THE national seminar on technology upgradation of in vegetable oil industry organised by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India here last week has come out with a set of recommendations.

These include cogeneration from agricultural wastes; use of bio-diesel as alternative fuel (which is non-toxic, cost effective, safe, biodegradable and easy to store); adoption of biotechnology; recovery of oil from spent bleaching earth; and use of poly meric membrane in processing vegetable oil.

Other recommendations include waste water recycling; hexane recovery from vent air; efficient use of steam, water and other energies and checking their wastage; adaptation to modern boiler technology; reduction in impurities at raw material stage; qualit y control through proper instrumentation; efficient dehulling of seeds; reduction in industrial effluent; reduction in solvent losses; and modification of existing government laws to help modernisation.
