Automobiles
Go vroom
When the history of Brands in India are written, one name is sure to be parked securely in a niche of its own: Royal Enfield. This chrome-and-black motorbike, instantly recognised by its staccato sound, is an institution on Indian roads. For close to hal f-a-century now, the Bullet has stood for reliability, ruggedness and the gritty Indian quality of sticking it out -- no matter what.

Consumer Notes
Waiting in vain for the gift
In the past few months, I have been receiving complaints from people about a magazine published from New Delhi. The publication, with a few other magazines to its credit, had been promoting itself with attractive gifts to entice subscribers. One of the m agazines, related to advertising and marketing, was offered at a very attractive subscription rate, including gifts for subscribers.

Corporate
On one's best behaviour
Most people seem to know what qualities they need to develop within themselves in order to grow. Unfortunately they don't know how to go about it. They attend programmes and workshops and emerge much smarter, much more aware, but somehow don't seem to be able to convert this new information into behaviour.

Hotels

Eat Indian
Nothing seems Indian at Caraway except for the food! It is a contemporarily designed restaurant serving regional Indian cuisine prepared, as we have always known, in the tandoori oven, sigri and kadai.

Information Technology
Designing bridges
So, your children and their friends are making a racket during your afternoon siesta.

Miscellaneous

Celebrating life
When the competition gets hot, smart marketers turn on the heat. Last week, several channels went into overdrive, trying to grab the viewers' attention, and in the space of 48 hours, there were at least four mega television events being held in Mumbai.

Technology

A woman of substance
Even as we step into the next millennium, there seems to be a sea change in the profile of a number of educated urban women. They are not just managers of their homes and mothers to their children but are making amazing strides in their chosen fields.

B for Bangalore and biotech
``While Karnataka is the acknowledged leader in information technology, I would like the State to lead the next revolution in biotechnology...''

Solar power sees the light of day
In a longish room, young men and women are bent over large panels, preparing inverters which will be fitted into solar lamps. In a corner, Phansi, who is from Kumaon, conducts quality-checks on solar lamps. Angmo is from Lahaul Spiti. ``It's so hot here, I'm going back soon,'' she says, face flushed red in the afternoon heat.

Travel & Places

Enthralling with surprises
Arriving at night, we saw nothing. A tired check-in, hasty dinner and a good night's sleep. That was about it. But tomorrow was another day... Morning brought with it the strong smell of coffee and a stronger urge to get out and explore the town, and som e town it turned out to be.

Along the Colombo coastline
It took me about 20 years to make it to the island that the Arabs called Serendib and the Portuguese called Ceilao. Taprobane, the land that had regaled its visitors since Biblical times, was almost next door, and it was inexplicable that the emerald isl e never figured on my globe-trotting itinerary.

The twin pinnacles of Yana
They stick out of the dense jungles of Northern Karnataka like towering monsters -- dark, ominous and wearing an unmistakable cloak of mystery. They catch you unawares when they suddenly burst into your line of vision.
