Port cargo traffic up

THE cumulative cargo traffic at major ports in the first eleven months of the fiscal 2000-01 was 256.85 million tonnes (MT) against the target of 259.97 MT and 246.18 MT actually handled in the corresponding previous period. The traffic handled in this p eriod recorded a 4.3 per cent increase over April-February 1999-2000, according to a government press release.

In February, major ports in the country handled an aggregate of 22.873 MT of cargo compared to the targeted 23.079 MT and the 23.581 MT actually handled in the corresponding month the previous year. This represents a decline of 0.9 per cent over the targ et and 3 per cent over February 2000. The release said the shortfall was due to less materialisation of general cargo. The total tonnage in operation, as on February 1 was 6.9 million gross registered tonnes (GRT) comprising 548 ships, compared to the pr evious month's total tonnage of 6.93 million GRT comprising 549 ships, the release said. -- Our Bureau
