KOTTAYAM: The Kerala Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company (KCPMC) has designed and developed a new machine for drying cardamom with electricity as its fuel. The machine is named `GreenKa'. The new machine which runs on electricity c an also work with a generator.

GreenKa has been designed to dry 500 kg of fresh cardamom a day along with retaining the green colour. The running cost comes to Rs 4.70 per kg at the rate of Rs 7 per unit. If it runs on with 15 KVA generator, the cost is worked out as Rs 3.19 per kg at the rate of Rs 19/litre.

The cardamom dumped into the drying box takes little time for layering as against the conventional process. Heated air is allowed to enter the drying box from the bottom of the drying machine.
