THAILAND, a major food exporter, has committed to making labelling of genetically engineered (GM) food mandatory latest by the end of the year. The intention to introduce labelling rules for GE food came a week after the Thai government's decision to ba n release of GE crops into the environment and to stop GE field trials was made public.

Marine products export crosses Rs 6,300 crore
MARINE product exports from the country increased by 23.3 per cent and touched Rs 6,300 crore during 2000-01, according to provisional figures released by the Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA). Marine products export during the 1999-2 000 fiscal was Rs 5,117 crore.

After demanding canalisation of sugar imports -- Industry seeks to scrap quota system
SUDDENLY, the sugar industry is singing a different tune with regard to exports. Till now, the overwhelming stance voiced by a dominant section of mills was to canalise all sugar exports through the Indian Sugar and General Industry Export Import Corpora tion Ltd (ISGIEIC), a jointly-owned company of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and the National Federation for Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSFL).



Restoration of EU sugar import quota sought
THE Government has sought the restoration of duty-free imports of up to 25,000 tonnes of refined sugar annually from the country by the European Union.
