No incidence of disease, say meat exporters

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, April 14

THE All India Meat & Livestock Exporters Association (AIMLEA) has clarified that there have been no incidence of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in India.

According to AIMLEA, doubts over BSE incidence rose following a Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) report that there are incidence of BSE in India. FAO had relied on the data of export of meat and bone meal from Britain.

UK's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has subsequently clarified that there was no export from UK to India during the period 1980-2000 of any meat and bone meal.

``A detail verification of data of imports into India for the last 20 years shows no imports of meat and bone meal have taken place from UK or any European Union country into India for the last 20 years,'' an AIMLEA press release said.
