Bio-diesel from vegoil fails to fuel market
WITH global vegetable oil markets in a protracted bear hug in the face of expanding production and large stocks and crude oil prices still relatively high, the talks of diversifying the use of vegetable oils (as substitute for mineral oil) have once agai n gained currency. Interestingly, last week, there were two reports on use of vegetable oil as bio-diesel, one based on palm oil and the other, on soyabean oil.

Nabard scheme to check distress sale
THE National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has introduced a `Rural godowns scheme' to stop farmers from resorting to distress sale during harvest time.

Mumbai to host meet on cottonseed processing
SCIENTIFIC processing of cottonseed is not followed on a large scale mainly due to economic consideration. The apparent loss by adopting scientific processing of cottonseed is actually illusory, considering the larger national interest, according to Prof D.N. Bhowmick, Head of Oils, Surfactants and Oleochemicals Division of the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) here.

Copra woes
Copra being stored at a godown in Kerala. The rockbottom price of coconut oil has compelled many farmers to stock it till the prices move up despite the MSP being fixed at Rs 3,250 per quintal.

Marginal rise in tea exports
THE country's tea exports rose marginally in 2000 to 197.83 million kg (m.kg) from 191.72 m.kg in 1999.
