Work on Tamluk-Digha rail link apace
KOLKATA: The first train carrying construction materials rolled on to the newly constructed broad gauge line from Tamluk to Nandakumar station on Wednesday last, in the proposed 81-km Tamluk-Digha rail link.
Nandakumar is the first station of the project, located 9.5 km away from Tamluk station. According to an official release by South Eastern Railway, the track has been laid with modern concrete sleepers and new 52 kg-90 UTS short welded panels. Completion
of this section has been done at the shortest possible time by resorting to round-the-clock working.
Work is also on in full swing between Nandakumar and Bajkul station. This section has the longest bridge over the River Haldi, consisting of 11 spans of 150 feet each, completed in a record time of five and half months. The track linking up to the bridge
has been completed, and three more major bridges in this section are on deep pile foundations, out of which two with steel girders have been completed.
Beyond Bajkul, up to Digha, there are 8 major bridges on deep pile foundations, out of which five have been completed.
#SER is mobilising men and materials on a massive scale at site to complete the project at the earliest.
The project is scheduled to be completed by March 31, and the first train to the sea resort of Digha (in Midnapore district) from Howrah is expected to be flagged off by early April. -- Our Bureau
