TN lorry owners decide not to overload trucks
Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Dec. 5
THE State Lorry Owners' Federation (SLOF), Tamil Nadu, has decided not to overload trucks beyond their stipulated capacity.
Accordingly, trucks with 16,200 kg registered laden weight (RLW) will load only nine tonnes of cargo, while 25,000 kg RLW trucks will load only 16 tonnes of cargo. Mini trucks will carry cargo as per Government stipulations, says a federation press relea
se.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of SLOF held on December 1, 2000 at Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, in which truck owners of SLOF from all over the State participated.
In a letter written to the State Transport Commissioner, the Federation has said that while the truck transporters were not getting adequate cargo to carry, the Government was not taking action to stop the increasing vehicle population.
As a result, there is an unhealthy competition within the industry, and most of the players are quoting freight charges below the market rate, and also overloading the trucks, the letter says.
In a bid to stop overloading of trucks, the Federation has also decided to stop overloaded trucks, and hand over them to the transport officials for taking appropriate action, says the letter.
