Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Nov. 25

THE Azim Premji Foundation (APF) has decided to work in tandem with the Andhra Pradesh Government and other leading NGOs for universalisation of elementary education.

Mr Azim Premji of Wipro and the members of the foundation held parleys with the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, on the issue of elementary education.

The APF was set up early this year to focus on universalisation of elementary education in the country. To begin with, it planned to work in States with progressive leadership such as Andhra Pradesh.

The foundation's focus would be on support for community mobilisation and using IT creatively to further the cost of universalisation of elementary education.

With experience in management, IT, training and development, APF had the ability to mobilise and contribute its resources. Its proposals included creating contextual models, which had the capacity both to replicate and to scale up on a State-wide basis u sing local initiative. The mobilisation process had already begun in 10 mandals in the State.

Its endeavour was also hoped to be supported by NGOs and other organisations. The model would recognise child labour as a major impediment to universalising elementary education.
