Finished steel production grows by 11.8%

NEW DELHI, March 24

THE total production of finished steel has grown by 11.82 per cent during the first 11 months of the current fiscal over the corresponding period last year.

According to an official press release, while the total production of finished steel during April 1999 - February 2000 stands at 250.29 lakh tonnes as against 223.83 lakh tonnes last year.

The three main producers, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), Tata Iron and Steel Company Ltd (Tisco) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) together accounted for 41 per cent of the total production at 102.59 lakh tonnes while the secondary producers ac counted for the remaining.

Their contribution during the same period last year was 91.31 lakh and 132.52 lakh tonnes respectively.

Total pig iron production during these 11 months stood at 28.50 lakh tonnes. The production during the same period in 1998-99 was 27.85 lakh tonnes.
