Hindustan Syringes meets production target

Girish Singhal

NEW DELHI, March 24

HINDUSTAN Syringes & Medical Devices Ltd (HMD) has achieved its annual production target of 1.5 billion medical disposables while working at 100 per cent capacity utilisation at its manufacturing facility near Faridabad in Haryana.

The company, which is a major manufacturer of medical disposables, has now set for itself an annual production and sales target of two billion units of the product by the end of fiscal 2001-02.

HMD markets its products under nine brand names including Dispovan, Glassvan, Unolok, Cathula and Scalpvan. ``The company's market share in disposable syringes, sold under the brand name Dispovan, has already crossed 65 per cent. The brand has become syn onymous with disposable syringes all over India,'' Mr. Rajiv Nath, Managing Director, told Business Line.

The `Unolok' and `Cathula' brands were introduced recently by the company for the Indian and international markets. The Unolok range includes disposable needles and scalp vein sets with luer lock mechanism. The Cathula range has been designed for greater patient comfort with reduced chances of inflammation and a longer in-dwelling period.

Commenting on the future plans, Mr. Nath, said, ``After achieving success for its medical disposables within the country, HMD is now reorienting its business in a big way to establish a winning presence in developed markets. We are targeting a total sale s turnover of Rs. 125 crores for the year 2000-2001. We plan to achieve this by focussing on value-added exports to developed markets. Currently, exports form 20 per cent of our total sales turnover and our target is to raise it to 25-30 per cent by the year 2001.''

As part of its export strategy, HMD has set up a 100 per cent subsidiary _ HMD Healthcare Ltd _ in the UK. It is also working on establishing a distribution chain to sell HMD branded products across the US and Western Europe.

The total installed capacity of the Faridabad plant, with ISO 9001, EN 46001 and CE certification, has recently been enhanced to 1.5 billion medical disposables. The capacity has been expanded with a total investment of around Rs. 50 crores in the past c ouple of years. The company is in the process of further expanding its capacity to take care of all its commitments in the domestic as well as export markets.
