Industry Western Coalfields clocks profit before tax at Rs 1,176 cr in FY08 NAGPUR: Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, has recorded a profit before tax at Rs 1,176 crore in the financial year 2007-08, registering an increase of Rs 112 crore over the previous year. The Chairman and Managing Director, Mr D C Garg said, WCL established new records in coal production, sales, coal supplies to consumers, productivity and turnover in 2007-08. Coal production during the year was 43.51 million tonnes, as against 43.21 million tonnes in the previous year. Offtake during the year totaled 44.90 million tonnes, registering a growth of 6.5 per cent over previous year's figure of 42.17 million tonnes . The record offtake enabled the company to bring down the level of coal stocks at the pitheads to 3.30 million tonnes as on April 1, 2008 from 4.69 million tonnes as on April 1, 2007. Productivity (output per manshift) during the year was 2.52 tonnes as against previous year's 2.50 tonnes, Mr Garg said. WCL recorded highest-ever sales realisation of Rs 6,108 crore in 2007-08, which was Rs 970 crore higher than the previous year. The provisional turnover of the company was Rs 5,780 crore as against Rs 5,012 crore in the previous year, he said. - PTI
