Naval ships to carry relief materials

Bringing relief to victims.

Naval ships are being entrusted with the job of transporting emergency relief materials for the cyclone-ravaged Myanmar. No merchant vessels will be chartered in immediate future, although the picture should be clearer in a week or so, a spokesman for World Food Programme, through which the aid from the Western countries is being channelised, has been quoted as saying in Lloyd’s List. India, as already reported, has deployed two of its warships to carry relief materi als from its naval base in Port Blair to Yangon, though two other vessels, both container vessels, “MV Marina Star 2” and “MV Ellen S,” belonging to Maxicon Container Line part of the Hyderabad-based Seaways Shipping, have been kept in readiness. These two ships offer regular sailings between India and Myanmar. Meanwhile, the authorities of the Hutchison Port Holdings are trying to establish contacts with officials of Myanmar International Container Terminal at Thilwaa, about 25 km from Yangon, facing the Andaman Sea. The telecom links having been disrupted, HPH is yet to assess the extent of damage caused to the terminal. Spread over 75 hectares, the terminal, operated by HPH, has five container berths with a total quayline of 1,000 metres.
